\u201cI do not have enough exposure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the limiting beliefs that young legal professionals, including lawyers, chartered accountants and company secretaries have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They shy away from assignments that look challenging or jobs that have a diverse profile on account of this belief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not only that, the other belief is that the \u2018exposure\u2019 can come only over years of experience and that too, if luck is in your favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, let\u2019s talk about what exactly \u2018exposure\u2019 is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It just means that you have come across diverse situations which you have not encountered before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means that you have taken on and completed work, which you have never done before. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means that you met some people of a kind that you have never met before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is when you get exposed to multiple different types of problems people face and this is when you start to think of the solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You want to get this kind of exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now think about what you are doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are turning away from work which you have never done before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You feel uncomfortable putting yourself in a situation in which you have never been before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are hesitant to move outside of your comfortable circles, and go out and meet people of the kind you have never met before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you see how you are acting completely against your objective?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exposure never happens to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have to go out and create it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I remember once, as part of working at a firm, I was asked to go to the office of a builder for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People in my office were refusing to go there, and at that time, I was unaware of why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I took up that assignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I went to that office, and instantly, I realised why people were unwilling to go there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a first impression, it looked like a \u2018Bhai\u2019s\u2019 den, and the directors of the company were huge, dark, scary-looking people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was quite taken aback, but I couldn\u2019t go back without completing the work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I barely had to interact with the directors. I simply had to get the documents sorted with the accountant (who was a little less scary looking) and leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody put a knife to my throat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody kidnapped me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I just completed my work and left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appearances are deceptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Situations are not as bad in reality as they seem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once in a while, we have to take a risk and venture out and experience things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s when you get exposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The easiest way is to meet and talk to five people of the kind you have never spoken to before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will come to know a lot of things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In today\u2019s age, social media facilitates this like never before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You want to connect with people only for professional purposes – use LinkedIn<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t even want to disclose who you are and yet communicate with people – use Reddit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You want to form communities for specific social purposes – use Facebook<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it\u2019s up to you to go out and create this. No one will come to you and give you exposure on a platter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiment. Struggle. Be reprimanded. Fall down. Get back up. Deliver. Be appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the cycle. You have to put it into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s all there is to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
