These two skills can open access to learning, opportunities, clients, and professional growth.

However, this advantage can be wasted if a person makes poor choices such as alcoholism, drugs, gambling, or other destructive habits.

At the same time, everyone will not become rich. That is the nature of every economy. Even when most people become comfortable, only a small percentage often the top 2% become truly wealthy.

Would You Want to Belong to the Top 2%?

If the answer is yes, then one important mindset shift is necessary: do not merely think like an employee in your own career or business.

You cannot restrict yourself only to the identity of a service professional either.

A lawyer who wants to build long-term wealth must gradually learn to think like a business owner.

Almost all people who belong to the top 2% club are business owners, or they hold significant equity in growing businesses.

This does not mean that every lawyer has to build software, set up a factory, or raise a large amount of capital.

As a lawyer, you already have an opportunity to start a services business.

You can begin with your knowledge, your skills, your ability to solve legal problems, and your understanding of a specific market.

You do not necessarily need capital or even office space to get started.

What People Think It Takes to Grow a Legal Services Business

Many lawyers believe that growing a legal services business requires a long list of expensive or difficult things. They often assume that they need:

A swanky office

Associates on payroll

A lifetime of networking

Upfront capital to invest

A lot of marquee clients

A godfather or powerful mentor

Money to hire marketing agencies

Parties and events for potential clients

A receptionist or secretary

These things may help later, but they are not the real starting point. For most lawyers, waiting for all of these things can become an excuse to delay the first step.

What You Really Need to Start

A legal services business is still a service business. That means the real foundation is not office space or capital. The real foundation is your ability to identify a problem, solve it well, and build trust with the right clients.

Start from where you are: You can begin from your apartment. You do not need an office in the first couple of years if you are still building your client base and refining your services.

Pick one clear niche: One niche area with high demand and low supply is enough to begin, especially if you can deliver strong results in that area.

Build proof of skill: If you have the skills, make sure you create a demonstrable track record. Clients trust proof more than claims.

Remember that this is not manufacturing: You do not need machines, stock, inventory, or heavy capital to start your own legal consulting business.

Look for underserved markets: There are always clients who are not getting the right solution at a price point they can afford.

Use social media wisely: In a world dominated by social media, getting your first 10 clients can be as simple as sharing your knowledge, learnings, struggles, and victories every day in a story format.

Build trust before charging premium fees: Before you try to charge top dollars, first establish value and make people confident that you can solve their problem.

Building and Scaling a Law Firm Is Possible

We have helped thousands of lawyers build and scale their own law firms.

If you want to get a job, we can definitely help.

But it is not necessarily much more difficult to build your own practice or law firm if you approach it with the right mindset, skills, and structure.

We are interested that you start your own firm because if you succeed, you may soon return to hire more of our students. It could be your turn.

How Can I Say This With Confidence?

You may be wondering: how can I say this? Have I actually used this advice myself?

I did exactly this.

First, I studied law and then got a job at a top law firm.

Initially, I was very happy. Back in 2011, my annual package was 14 lakh per year. At that time, I thought I was very successful.

One day, I saw my partner’s tax return by accident. A peon had left a bunch of partners’ tax returns on my desk.

He was a salaried partner. Law firms often make you a salaried partner after 10–15 years if you are good at your lawyering skills, loyal, and willing to do the grunt work.

What shocked me was that all of them earned below 50 lakhs per year.

The flat I lived in had a retail value of 2 crores. It was a tiny 2 BHK.

I realised that if I kept working as a salaried lawyer with an employee mindset, I would find it hard to even own the property I lived in even if I became a partner.

I would probably have to rent forever or pay most of my paycheque to a bank in the form of interest.

On the other hand, the rainmakers, the law firm partners who could do business development and bring in clients were making 2-3 crores per year.

The Cashflow Quadrant Realisation

Then I met someone who told me about the cashflow quadrant.

Cashflow quadrant: a simple way to understand the difference between being an employee, self-employed professional, business owner, and investor.

I realised that it is best to be an investor because then I would not have to work directly for money. But there was a problem: to become an investor, I first needed surplus capital.

The rainmaker partners who could bring in clients had that surplus cash. They received huge bonuses, and managing partners would go out of their way to keep them happy. If they left, they could start out on their own or join a competitor.

As for me, I had no capital and did not want to wait.

There was one more option: to become an entrepreneur.

It became clear to me that the way to become rich and have enough capital to become an investor one day was to become an entrepreneur first. I also needed to start a business that could begin with no capital.

How I Started Building a Business With No Capital

That is how I ended up building businesses like iPleaders, ClikLawyer, LawSikho, and Skill Arbitrage over the last 10 years.

I started back in 2012. I really started building my consulting business from my bedroom.

I studied the problems of my target markets deeply and started building solutions. Making money was never a problem when I could solve people’s problems well.

There were major setbacks along the way. Around 2018, we almost went bankrupt.

This year, we did our IPO, and today our company is valued around 500 crores+ by market capitalisation.

My goal is to grow this to over 8000 crores in the years to come.

My personal wealth is already well over 100 crores, and I am loving this journey.

Why Lawyers Should Think Beyond Being Employees

This is why I encourage everyone with patience, focus, and ambition to not remain merely an employee or self-employed professional. At the very least, a lawyer should consider starting a legal services business.

Think about it. As India grows richer and the disposable income of Indians grows, the number of formal businesses also grows. With that growth, regulations, compliances, contracts, disputes, and legal needs also grow.

Was there ever a better time to build a legal services business?

Why Today Is Different From the Previous Generation

It was not so easy in our father’s or grandfather’s generation.

There was no internet, no social media, no opportunity to build a personal brand, no digital marketing, and no simple way to learn the skills you can easily learn today.

Many wealthy clients also avoided contracts, compliances, and the formal justice system.

In those days, you could only rely on referrals from your network and your existing clients. It took decades to build even a reasonable legal practice.

Now, using digital tools, you can do in 2 years what our parents’ generation did in 20 years.

The Opportunity in Front of Lawyers Today

You have a great opportunity. The question is whether you will make the best of it and take your shot at becoming part of the richest 2% of Indians.

Or will you be happy to remain middle class while doing well-paid jobs?

Both are valid choices. But I always wanted to be at the top. That is just me.

What would you choose?

The Most Common Excuse: Being Too Busy

I know your top excuse at this point:

“I am already too busy to do anything new.”

Are you thinking like this?

This is where the real shift begins: from thinking only like an employee to thinking like the owner of a legal services business. A lawyer who wants long-term growth must learn to build trust, choose a niche, develop business skills, and use modern digital tools to create opportunities that were not available to previous generations.

Conclusion

In conclusion, starting a legal services business in 2026 is no longer limited to lawyers with big offices, large teams, strong family networks, or heavy capital. With the right niche, practical skills, trust-building, consistency, and smart use of digital tools, a lawyer can begin small and gradually build a strong, profitable practice. The opportunity is especially powerful today because India’s growing economy, rising number of formal businesses, and increasing legal needs are creating more demand for reliable legal services. For lawyers who are patient, focused, and willing to think beyond the employee mindset, this may be the right time to take ownership of their future and build a practice that can grow into a real business.

India is changing quickly.
