Introduction
The issue of women and girls having experienced gender-specific violence and discrimination that impedes their ability to fully enjoy their human rights by State and non-State actors relying on religious “justifications” for their actions have for long remained a pertinent issue in our daily lives. However, till date, much attention has not been given to understanding the intersections between gender-based discrimination and religious beliefs. This despite, civil society and faith-based actors often highlighting the varied ways in which women and girls have been denied equal personhood in both the private and the public spheres in States where interpretations of religious doctrine that promote gender-based violence and
discrimination are enforced through law and policy. In this regard, the field of international human rights law must readjust and adapt to the social-cultural realities of the gender problems and also religious issues taking place across the globe. This edited book delves into the intricate task of protecting human rights of women and girls by critically examining the complex interplay between human dignity, personal safety, non-discrimination and especially religious beliefs.
