Contract Drafting is lucrative Skill for Lawyers and Law Students
In-house lawyers say that they spend anywhere between 40-70% of their time drafting contracts. Very frequently, they are either drafting, reviewing, or negotiating a contract.
In law firms too, contract drafting is often most of your work unless you are in the disputes team or too junior to work on contracts.
Mastering contract drafting is essential for lawyers to provide top-notch services to their clients.
It is a skill that is highly sought after, given its profitability and demand in various industries.
However, learning contract drafting is not typically taught in law schools, leaving young lawyers to learn on the job from their seniors.
This can be challenging and time-consuming, but with the right training, aspiring lawyers can become proficient contract drafters within a relatively short period.
Litigating lawyers do not necessarily draft a lot of contracts. But even if you are going into litigation in the early years when cases are hard to come by and stipend paid by senior advocates from whom you are learning some work is low, contract drafting can give you some respite.
After all, even an independent lawyer can charge at least INR 10,000 for even a basic contract.
For a complicated contract like Franchisee Agreement, Shareholders Agreement or Technology Transfer Agreement, an independent junior lawyer can also charge INR 30000-50000.
For specialized contracts like an Advanced Pricing Agreement under transfer pricing laws, the charges can easily cross INR 50,000. Law firms, of course, charge in lakhs for such agreements - be it an investment agreement or a loan agreement.
Contract drafting is very profitable.
Some lawyers from India and other countries have started tapping into this opportunity by performing contract drafting and paralegal work, but that is only the tip of the ice-berg. There is much more to do on this front.
However, how do you learn contract drafting? A comprehensive 1-year course on contract drafting and negotiation aims to bridge this gap and provide aspiring lawyers with the expertise they need to excel in this field. The course is thoughtfully structured, covering various types of contracts across different industries.
If you are a lawyer or law student, you will be able to capture commercial deals very accurately in customized contracts that are watertight and comprehensively address your client’s intention.
To reinforce learning and practical application, the course includes over 100 micro-exercises, providing hands-on experience to tackle real-life contract drafting challenges.
The course is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of contract drafting, making participants capable of handling general commercial agreements, corporate contracts, technology contracts, IP contracts, and more.
With weekly mentoring sessions and ample reading material and video content, students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the complexities of contract drafting in a professional setting.
Ultimately, this course benefits not only lawyers but also professionals in various roles who regularly deal with contracts, such as business leaders, project management professionals, and contract management professionals.
Contract Drafting & Negotiation is an essential skill for lawyers seeking success in their legal careers, and a well-structured and comprehensive course can help aspiring lawyers achieve expertise in this area efficiently.

Can I get remote freelance work after doing this course?
At LawSikho, we have two types of students: those who already possess good legal skills and those who are in the process of learning. We believe in enabling our learners to start earning from their knowledge without delay.
For students with professional-level legal skills, we offer opportunities in contract drafting, data & privacy, international business law, US immigration law, litigation support, and international IP law work.
However, we understand that acquiring professional-level skills takes time. For those who are still developing their legal skills, we provide alternative work opportunities such as writing articles, conducting research, legal transcription, data entry, law firm administration, social media management, and more. Some students even engage in tasks like voice-over work, data compilation, translation, and virtual assistance.
We have established a dedicated team that actively pitches to organizations in the US to help LawSikho students find remote work.
We have set up a US entity to bridge the trust gap between US legal professionals and an organization operating from India.
We focus on getting learners their first three clients, guiding them in crafting impressive proposals. By the time they secure these initial clients, learners become well-adjusted to the process and can independently attract more clients.
They build their CVs and profiles with real work experience and testimonials, opening doors to numerous opportunities.
Getting started is often the hardest part, but at LawSikho, we make the process frictionless. We have witnessed law students earning well over $1000 per month.
Some students have earned $500 in their first month as a side gig. We have students who, after a year, now earn $10,000 per month. While some may start with $300, they make progress by learning new skills, improving their profiles, and pitching for higher-paying work.
Between April 2021 and June 2023, we created over 21000+ opportunities for our learners, resulting in thousands of students securing freelance work. The total value of work secured amounts to over $3,30,000 (Aprox INR 2.7 Crore). Additionally, hundreds of individuals found employment, and secured internships.
Please note that these numbers represent the initial gigs facilitated directly by us or those on which we actively collaborated with the learners. Students have also secured additional work beyond our tracking.
Here are a few examples of learners who secured remote freelance work:
Ankit Bhargava, a law graduate from B.R. Ambedkar University, Agra, 2016, was a struggling criminal lawyer, but he also started performing remote work for US clients through multiple platforms such as People per Hour and UpWork, Freelancer.com, etc. in January 2021, after enrolling in the course on US IP Prosecution, Enforcement and Licensing. In 3 months, he worked on 150 projects for more than 50 clients, across 35 countries, including US, Canada, most of the European Union, UK, Ukraine, Russia, Australia, earning USD 100 or more per project.
Muraleedharan R., a lawyer with 33 years of legal experience and a practice in Kerala, was doing service law matters, and his practice was impacted during the pandemic. Our team helped him create a freelance profile that was accepted, and he soon got projects for over USD 1200. His story is shared here.
Hitanshi Khandelwal, LawSikho (January 2021), 4th year law student, B.A.LLB, Amity University, Kolkata, India, 22 jobs (2,275 hours), earned more than USD 17000. Here is her video testimonial.

Toppers' Testimonials

I am in 4th year of my BBA LLB, which means I have to manage papers and my internship, the LawSikho course has made me more productive and it has helped me boost my confidence and skills. Each class added value and I would specifically thank my mentors for that. This course will benefit law students and law graduates alike as it teaches drafting, which is helpful.

During my last internship, I had to review a PPA, but I found it very difficult after which I decided to take up the LawSikho course, and I was able to ace my next internship. I want to thank my mentors for that. I believe that every person who is connected with the legal industry should take this course because every aspect involves drafting.

Initially, I had no idea about drafting but after taking this course I have gained a lot of confidence by performing the weekly exercises and attending live sessions.

This course has particularly proven very beneficial to me. This course is important for young professionals who want to get exposure to industrial experience. The team is dedicated and follows up with you for regular feedback and ensure that all your assignments are completed on time.

This course has particularly proven very beneficial to me. This course is important for young professionals who want to get exposure to industrial experience. The team is dedicated and follows up with you for regular feedback and ensure that all your assignments are completed on time.

Memorable learning is about the crux of drafting. An interesting thing happened when I was interning in one of the top-tier corporate firms and they gave me an actual case and wanted me to draft a written statement for the said case. I was able to frame it along with evidences. This course is different from college because it deals with practical assignments. Moreover, we are encouraged to write articles and publish them on the ipleaders blog.

My experience in pursuing this course has been great. I not only thoroughly enjoyed drafting agreements but also it is a good practice session which makes me continuously think.

This course has helped me from getting to understand the commercial intent of the parties to visualizing the circumstances while defending the client from both sides. Penultimate year law students can help get exposure in different industries while professionals in other departments working closely with legal teams can learn practical skills.

I found the live sessions, interacting with the expert, solving different types of assignments and the feedback on the same very effective here. Every person from the legal profession should do this course as they will benefit from it.

What Top Legal Experts and Practitioners Say

(Former Associate at Dua, Archer and Angel and Clasis Law)
I have seen the design and syllabus of Lawsikho courses at close quarters, and they teach practical skills relevant for day to day work performed by corporate lawyers. These skills are not taught in law school and will be highly beneficial while working in law firms. If there was something like this available back when I was in law school, I would have definitely taken it up. This diploma course is very comprehensive and will benefit anyone who intends to build a practice in corporate law or work in a law firm.

We would keep adding new material online from time to time, so please do not expect all such material to be made available in the hard copy also. As a young lawyer who wants to work in a law firm, tax is a very highly rewarding area to specialise in.
It has low competition but high opportunity, and most lawyers are quite scared of tax laws in law school and afterwards.
If you want to get into an area of law where there is no dearth of jobs no matter how the market is doing, and far less competition than other areas of law, then tax law is a great choice.
India has complex tax laws. Despite significant simplification of indirect tax laws through introduction of GST, laws remain complicated and are changed fairly frequently. It is also a service that almost every business requires.
With government efforts to increase the tax net, the number of taxpayers have been drastically increasing in the last couple of years. Number of businesses paying both GST and Income Tax is steadily rising, which is increasing the future market for tax lawyers and especially corporate taxation lawyers in a big way.
As the Indian economy is moving towards formalization from a mostly informal economy, the clout as well as market for tax lawyers is on the rise.
Government hires a large number of tax lawyers as it is going after non-taxpayers aggressively.
One of the biggest area of growth for tax lawyers in tax advisory, and compliances, which is also done by accountants. However, advice of lawyers is sought after, and this area is seeing growth too.
Apart from ongoing income tax, GST and other tax disputes, significant opportunities also arise in every transaction as tax lawyers provide very critical inputs with respect to tax efficiency of every transaction.
Whether a company should be bought by acquisition of shares or slump sale, whether to acquire the subsidiary or the holding company in another country, how to reduce tax liabilities in each transaction - these things are decided by tax lawyers.
If you want to become a successful litigator, and yet earn well during your early days, starting your career as a tax lawyer is a good strategy. Some of India’s most famous lawyers such as Nani Palkhivala, Harish Salve, Arvind Datar etc. started as tax lawyers, and eventually became the most illustrious constitutional lawyers.
This is partly because tax law matters are high stakes, and the government keeps coming up with new tax laws and changes in existing laws, opening an opportunity for challenging these laws in the court.
The opportunity to build big law firms is also very high for tax lawyers. Several leading full service law firms today were originally started by tax lawyers. Good examples will be Nishith Desai Associates, Lakshmikumaran and Sridharan, Economic Law Practice, Vaish Associates, etc. Ajay Bahl of AZB & Partners used to be a tax practitioner. In these cases, highly profitable tax practices eventually led to creation of larger full service corporate law practices.
In short, tax law offers opportunities like few other areas of law. It is evergreen, always in high demand and good tax lawyers are always short in supply.
Companies which earn thousands of crores have to pay taxes in hundreds of crores. They will go to great lengths to legally reduce their tax burden, which straight on adds to their profits. Naturally, it is lucrative to be an effective tax lawyer
