(i) Age limit: Age as on 1st July 2023
For Practising Advocates/ Pleader / Assistant Public Prosecutors 
Minimum = 25 years
Maximum = 35 years (For SC, ST & OBC - 40 Years)
For Fresh Law Graduates
Minimum = 22 years
Maximum = 27 years

(ii) Must be a Citizen of India

(iii) Must possess a Degree in Law of a University in India established or incorporated by or under a Central Act or a State Act or an Institution recognized by the University Grants Commission, or any other equivalent qualification and got enrolled as an Advocate under a State Bar Council established under the Advocates Act, 1961 

(iv) Must possess adequate knowledge to read, write and speak in English and Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu.

Syllabus

Preliminary Examination [Objective Type Question Paper in Optical Mark Recognition Paper (OMR Paper]

Mains Examination; and

Viva–Voce Test. 

Phase 1- Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary objective type/Screening test shall consist of one paper of Objective type (Multiple Choice Question). The paper carries a maximum of 100 marks. The time allowed for each paper shall be three hours. The papers will be set in English only, each question shall carry one mark and 0.10 mark will be deducted for each incorrect answer.

PART – B 

The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 

The Indian Penal Code, 1860 

The Indian Evidence Act, 1872 

The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act and 

The Criminal Minor Acts (including Information Technology Act, 2000; and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012). 

PART – C 

General Knowledge (Degree standard), 

Test of Reasoning and Mental ability (S.S.L.C. standard). 

Note: Minor Acts mentioned in the syllabus are only illustrative and not exhaustive.

Phase 2 - Mains Examination

The Main Written Examination shall be held on two consecutive days in the Forenoon and Afternoon sessions. There shall be four descriptive type question papers. Each paper shall be of three hours duration and shall carry 100 Marks each.

The Descriptive papers are as follows:

(i) Paper I - Translation Paper

(ii) Paper II - Law Paper – I

(iii) Paper III - Law Paper – II

(iv) Paper IV - Law Paper – IV

On the first day, the examination shall be for Translation Paper & Law Paper - I and on the 2nd day, the Examination shall be for Law Paper II & Law Paper III

Syllabus

Paper I - Translation Paper 

There will be one translation paper and the candidates will be required to translate passages from (a) English into Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu and likewise, the passages in (b) Tamil or Malayalam or Telugu into English at their option. The passages will be from (i) Depositions, (ii) Judgments, (iii) Documents, (iv) Pleadings, and/or (v) Orders. 

Paper II - Law Paper I

(a) The Code of Civil Procedure, 1908;

(b)The Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973; 

(c) The Indian Evidence Act, 1872;

(d)Principles of Pleading and The Constitution of India (as Amended) 

Paper III - Law Paper II

Framing of Issues and Writing of Judgments in Civil Cases.

Paper IV - Law Paper II

Framing of charges and Writing of Judgments in Criminal Cases. 

Phase 3 - Viva-Voce:

Viva-voce test shall be for sixty (60) marks and candidates shall obtain minimum 18 marks for a pass in the Viva-voce.
