Why is this the right time to become an in-house counsel?

In-house counsel jobs are growing faster than law firm jobs

  • As in-house lawyers can provide more cost-effective and efficient legal solutions, they have a deeper understanding of the business, industry, and stakeholders, which allows them to provide more strategic and holistic advice in a bulk of legal matters compared to outside counsels.
  • According to the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), India has one of the world's largest and fastest-growing in-house counsel populations, with over 12,000 in-house lawyers in 2023. We could expect the number to double in next 3 years due to growing formalization and regulatory intensity.
  • The average salary for in-house counsel in India was INR 25,55,450 in 2023, 67% higher than the average lawyer's salary as of 2023.

Formalisation of the economy

  • With the economy becoming more formalised, regulated, and digitised, the number of companies with a legal team is drastically increasing.
  • Contracts are signed more often, enforcement is frequent, and compliance requirements are rapidly growing. Even policy advocacy has emerged as a critical function for larger corporations.
  • Competition still remains very low as most lawyers have not yet recognised this gap in the market and have not prepared themselves to meet this demand.

Work-life balance

  • Work life balance is a myth for lawyers, especially in law firms as well as in litigation. But in-house jobs are different. According to Legally India, 72% in-house counsels work less than 50 hours per week and have higher satisfaction with their work-life balance than those who work in law firms.

Strategic inputs and long-term vision

  • In-house counsel can do much more than just resolve disputes or draft contracts.
  • They provide strategic inputs and long-term vision for the company which help them to identify and mitigate legal risks, enable their org to capitalise on opportunities, cut down legal bills, increase shareholder confidence in corporate governance and therefore influence stock price, reduce regulatory challenges, engage in policy advocacy and preserve brand value & reputation.
  • A good in-house counsel can provide serious competitive advantage to a fast growing business.

What does an in-house counsel do?

As an in-house counsel, your work is primarily divided into four categories:

  • 1. contracts
  • 2. compliance
  • 3. dispute resolution
  • 4. policy work

While specialisation is not necessary for in-house counsels, and in fact some amount of generalist skills are must for these roles, eventually you can choose to work and specialise in specific sectors such as media, telecom, banking, e-commerce, and healthcare too if that interests you.

The variety and diversity make a career as an in-house counsel both satisfying and financially rewarding.
