The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) is an independent civil society organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with offices in Austria, South Africa, Colombia and Malta, and a globally dispersed Secretariat working in around 40 countries. GI-TOC comprises a network of more than 500 independent global and regional experts working on human rights, democracy, governance, and development issues where organized crime has become increasingly pertinent. GI-TOC provides a platform to promote greater debate and innovative approaches as the building blocks to an inclusive global strategy against organized crime. GI-TOC commissions and shares research globally; curates a robust resource library of 2,000 reports and tools specific to organized crime; and uses its convening power to unite both the private and public sectors against organized crime.
Details of the Job/Internship
Global Initiative against Transnational Organized Crime is hiring for the position of APA Legal Consultant to join them Virtually.
Role and Responsibilities
Legal Review & Scoping
- Conduct a scoping study/review of international legislation and best practise in the field of organized crime and anti-corruption, focussing on how frameworks can be/are being leveraged to address the challenges posed by criminal influence of foreign actors.
- Review, identify and analyse the applicability of relevant provisions of the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) to challenges relating to criminal influence by foreign actors.
Analysis & Engagement
- Identify and analyse key approaches, and best practice, adopted globally, and in the South East Asia region.
- This analysis will draw on both legal review and scoping of existing legislative frameworks, and interviews and reviews with relevant practitioners to assess how frameworks are applied in practice.
Advisory & Relationships
- Draw on an extensive network of criminal justice, law enforcement and other contacts to support the project.
- Advise project staff on shaping and implementing project activities.
Leadership & Representation (to be determined)
- Lead a team of local legal consultants to undertake domestic legislature review and analysis.
- Advising on the development of tools to build awareness and capacity with the defined stakeholder community.
- To support wider GI-TOC efforts to engage on building collaborative multi-sectoral approaches.
- To engage and present on behalf of the GI-TOC.
Eligibility
- A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree or equivalent.
- Five years or more experience in international criminal and/or anti-corruption law.
- Substantial experience in the domain of organized crime.
- Strong understanding of legal frameworks and international conventions relevant to organized crime.
- Strong analytical skills, and experience in desk research and report writing.
- Highly organized and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently under limited guidance.
- Good level of written and spoken English.
