Details of the Job/Internship
PhonePe is hiring for the position of Associate Director, Legal with 15 years of experience to join their office in Bengaluru.
Role and Responsibilities
- Legal Advisory (Insurance Focus):
- Advise business, operations, and technology teams on legal aspects of insurance products, platforms, and processes.
- Draft and negotiate a wide range of contracts and agreements, including partnership agreements, audit obligations, MIS integrations, etc.
- Handle legal matters relating to claims, disputes, or fraud investigations in collaboration with partner insurers.
- Conduct legal research on new product lines and emerging regulatory risks.
- Regulatory Engagement & Governance:
- Provide legal guidance on day-to-day business operations in line with regulatory expectations.
- Prepare and manage license applications (new/renewal) and maintain regulatory documentation.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory bodies such as IRDAI; manage ongoing communications, inspections, and submissions.
- Draft regulatory manuals and operational guardrails to guide business units in compliant functioning.
- Monitor regulatory developments (including circulars, exposure drafts) and lead institutional responses.
- Represent PIBS in industry forums and with regulators on policy advocacy and compliance preparedness.
- Process & Compliance Enablement:
- Collaborate with Compliance, Tech, and Product teams to address regulatory queries and implement changes.
- Draft and implement SOPs defining legal and operational boundaries.
- Identify legal risk areas and advise on mitigation strategies.
- Partner with internal stakeholders to embed regulatory thinking into product and process development.
- Strategic Legal Partnering:
- Collaborate with external legal counsels and in-house legal teams of partner insurers to stay updated on legal trends and issues.
- Assist in negotiations with partners' legal, risk, and compliance teams.
- Act as a thought partner for the business by offering pragmatic, solutions-oriented legal input.
Eligibility
- Qualifications & Experience:
- LL.B./LL.M. with at least 15 years of post-qualification experience.
- Core experience in the insurance industry, ideally with both insurer/intermediary roles. Exposure to other BFSI sectors (e.g., stock broking, NBFCs) is a plus.
- Experience working in both law firms and in-house roles is preferred.
- Strong legal acumen in financial services laws, corporate law, business laws, data privacy, and information security standards.
- Prior engagement with regulatory bodies such as IRDAI, SEBI, or RBI is essential.
