Details of the Job/Internship
SM Legal Advocates & Solicitors is hiring a Junior Associate – Indirect Tax Litigation & Advisory with minimum of 1 year of post-qualification experience to join their office in Kolkata. The role involves handling indirect tax litigation and advisory work, including briefing, research, drafting, court appearances, and case management.
Role and Responsibilities
- Independently brief senior advocates on case matters and prepare case summaries and updates.
- Conduct thorough legal research on indirect tax matters and analyse relevant case laws, statutes, and regulations.
- Appear independently for case mentioning before courts and handle procedural matters and urgent applications as directed.
- Draft legal opinions, writ petitions, appeals, replies, rejoinders, and other legal documents.
- Get documents reviewed and settled by seniors and ensure timely preparation and submission of all legal documents.
- Assist senior advocates during hearings, prepare hearing notes and case briefs, and coordinate with clients for hearing preparation.
- Maintain organised case files, ensure proper documentation and filing systems, and track case progress and deadlines.
Eligibility
- Law degree (LL.B./BA LL.B./BBA LL.B.) from a recognised institution.
- Mandatory enrolment with Bar Council – West Bengal.
- Minimum 1 year of post-qualification experience in the tax domain.
- Strong understanding of indirect tax laws (GST, Service Tax, Customs, Excise).
- Excellent legal research and analytical abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in legal drafting.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple cases.
- Attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Proficiency in legal databases and research tools.
- Good command over English and the local language.
