This is an exciting opportunity for an associate with a background in Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) law who is eager to deepen their expertise in data protection and privacy, AI regulation, and policy.

Details of the Job/Internship

Poovayya & Co. is hiring an Associate for Technology Law, Data Protection, and Privacy with experience of 3 to 5 years to join their office in Bengaluru.

Role and Responsibilities

Client Advisory & Support: Provide strategic advice on data protection, privacy laws, and compliance obligations in line with (Indian) DPDP Act and (upcoming) Rules, GDPR, CCPA, and other global privacy regulations.
Counsel clients on a range of data privacy and consumer protection matters, supporting them in managing risks related to data usage, storage, and transfer.
Advise clients on risks, compliance requirements and legal interpretations that apply to the development and implementation of AI.
Research & Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on evolving data privacy regulations, TMT laws, AI regulations, frameworks and standards and consumer protection laws/policies.
Analyse complex legal issues and trends, offering well-reasoned insights and practical solutions.
Drafting & Negotiation: Draft, review, and, as applicable, negotiate data processing agreements, privacy policies, terms of service, and other legal or contractual documents.
Support clients in contract negotiations involving data protection elements, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Knowledge Management, Client Communication & Training:
Serve as a key point of contact for clients, providing timely and clear communication and updates on legal matters and updates.
Deliver presentations and training sessions on data protection practices, regulations, and risk mitigation strategies to client teams.
Participate in conferences and seminars on data protection and privacy, AI and allied topics.
Contribute to the firm’s business development activities by organizing relevant events, seminars, knowledge-sharing sessions, etc.
Cross-Practice Collaboration:
Work with attorneys across various practice areas, including corporate and litigation, to provide holistic client support.
Support cross-functional projects, including due diligence reviews, for technology-driven transactions and other regulatory matters.

Eligibility

Experience: 3-5 years of legal experience, preferably within a law firm or in-house legal team, with a focus on technology, media, and telecom (TMT) law. Prior experience in fintech regulation and advisory is acceptable as well.
Education: Five-year or Three-year LLB from a premier Indian law school. A specialized LLM in technology law, although not mandatory, would be an advantage.
Specialization: Prior exposure to data protection, consumer protection, or privacy law is a plus, though not mandatory.
Research Skills: Excellent legal research skills with a keen ability to interpret and apply complex regulations.
Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail, ensuring accuracy and precision in legal analysis and documentation.
Communication Skills: Clear and effective communication skills with the ability to explain complex legal issues to clients and internal stakeholders.
Drafting & Negotiation: Demonstrated experience in drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts and agreements.
Collaborative Nature: A team player with an approachable demeanor, open to learning and contributing in a collaborative environment.
Curiosity & Drive: Eager to learn and grow in the data protection and privacy/AI space, with a proactive approach to professional development.
Adaptability & Versatility: Ability to work across various legal domains and willingness to handle both corporate and litigation-related tasks, as needed.
