Details of the Job/Internship
PETA India is hiring a Legal Associate with a minimum of 3 years of experience to join their Cruelty Response Team in Mumbai or Delhi.
Role and Responsibilities
- Monitor the progress of criminal trials arising from FIRs and PORs handled by the Cruelty Response Team.
- File and defend court applications specifically for the rescue and rehabilitation of abused animals.
- Conduct specialized legal research to support ongoing litigation and identify applicable charges for animal crimes.
- Recruit and collaborate with external local counsels and liaise with Public Prosecutors to ensure case progression.
- Draft official correspondence, RTI requests, and legal reports to build sound arguments against animal cruelty.
- Represent PETA India professionally in dealings with the police, judiciary, media, and government stakeholders.
- Maintain organized digital and physical records of petitions, court orders, and legal bonds.
- Travel independently to various locations to manage urgent court-related responsibilities.
Eligibility
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) from a BCI-recognized university.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, with at least 2 years specifically in Criminal Law or Litigation.
- Sound knowledge of Indian criminal laws and practical trial court experience.
- Language: Fluency in both Hindi and English is mandatory; additional regional languages are an asset.
- Lifestyle: Adherence to a vegan lifestyle is required to align with the organization's philosophy.
- Competencies: Strong commitment to animal rights, exceptional organizational skills, and a self-driven, compassionate character.
