Tata Steel is hiring for the position of Legal Counsel with 3 years of experience to join their office in Jamshedpur.
Role and Responsibilities
A. Litigation Management
- Handle GST and other indirect tax litigations at the adjudication and appellate levels (Commissioner (Appeal), CESTAT).
- Represent the organization before adjudicating and appellate authorities, including preparation and presentation of legal arguments.
B. Legal Analysis & Research
- Analyze statutory provisions, notifications, and circulars related to GST, Excise, Service Tax, and Customs.
- Conduct comprehensive legal research using electronic/online tools to support case strategy and content development.
- Stay updated with the latest developments in indirect tax laws and support the Legal & Indirect Tax teams with:
- Recent case laws, government notifications, and circulars.
- Legal inputs for in-house advisory notes and opinions.
C. Drafting
- Prepare replies to show cause notices (SCNs), appeals, and petitions.
- Assist external counsel with legally and factually substantiated briefs, including well-researched notes for accurate representation.
D. Coordination & Collaboration
- Collaborate with internal departments including Finance & Accounts and the Indirect Tax Centre of Excellence (CoE) for data collection and issue analysis.
- Liaise with law firms and advocates for managing litigation effectively.
- Take initiative in briefing external counsels and providing detailed notes covering legal and factual issues.
Eligibility
- LLB (3-year or 5-year course) from a recognized institution.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in handling GST litigations.
- In-depth understanding of the GST regime, Excise and Service Tax law, including adjudication and appellate procedures.
- Familiarity with indirect tax rules related to CENVAT credit, valuation, tariffs, and appeals.
- Good understanding of allied laws such as CPC, IPC, CrPC, Indian Evidence Act, and Indian Contract Act.
- Strong legal drafting and analytical skills.
- Demonstrated ability to brief and coordinate with advocates and law firms.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to mentor junior team members.
- Self-driven and result-oriented mindset.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
