The CPA Project is a litigation and research-driven advocacy intervention based in Bhopal, committed to ending the disproportionate targeting of oppressed caste communities, particularly the Denotified Tribes (DNTs), by the criminal justice system. Their vision encapsulates anti-caste and anti-carceral framings of the casteist colonial roots of policing that value incarceration over care.
Details of the Job/Internship
The CPA Project is hiring for candidate for the position of Litigation Associate with 1-2 years of experience to join to work with them.
Role and Responsibilities
Litigation
- Represent CPA and appear in various judicial forums in Bhopal and other parts of MP.
- Undertake legal research, drafting and writing work for various cases
- Provide pre-trial support to accused persons in police stations
- Undertaking regular meetings with members of criminalised communities living in bastis across Bhopal, addressing their legal needs and concerns.
- Conduct legal research to support litigation efforts, staying informed about relevant laws, regulations, and precedents applicable to ongoing cases.
- Maintain direct and effective communication with clients, providing them with regular updates, guidance, and support throughout the legal process.
- Effectively manage and organise case files, documentation, and correspondence related to litigation matters, ensuring timely progress and adherence to deadlines.
- Work alongside the advocacy and research team to contribute to CPA's strategic litigation endeavours.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance legal knowledge, skills, and competencies. Share expertise with colleagues to build organisational capacity.
Organisational
- Contribute to the anti-caste culture at CPA in enabling methodologies and ethical praxis in the work environment.
- Engage with advocacy and networking related activities as well as with organisational activities from time to time.
- Contribute to making CPA a learning organisation
- Undertake mutual sharing and participation in team meetings and contribute to team building.
- Support engagement with donors by providing regular updates and reports on the progress of our work, fostering a collaborative and transparent relationship.
Eligibility
- Law graduate.
- Mustbeenrolled with the Bar Council of India.
- Preferred work experience of 1-2 years ideally in criminal trial litigation, legal advocacy, or related fields.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with Madhya Pradesh, especially with the legal landscape, social justice issues, and community dynamics would be advantageous.
- Strong verbal and written Hindi, English communication skills
Salary/Stipend
The candidate will be paid an amount within the range of INR Rs 45000 50,000 total (including 10% TDS).
