2 years into privacy : could this be your future

I want to fire up your desire today.

If you want to achieve big things in life, there are 4 things you must do:

  1. You must desire them
  2. You must believe that you can achieve them
  3. You must get a plan
  4. You must take the necessary action (execute)

Let us imagine your future 2 years down the road.

Imagine that you have been transported to the future.

And create these images in your head.

Add as many vivid details as you want.

The more clearly you can see your future in your mind’s eye, the more likely it is that you will take action.

You are watching this eye treat in Iceland in May 2026. You are currently on a week’s vacation after completing a major client project.

Your current salary is 5 lakhs per month in Indian Rupees (22K AED per month). Your work allows you to travel around the world while working.

You get time with your family and your friends.

Your batchmates, who are mostly struggling to build their career in India, envy you for what you have achieved today.

You have moved abroad in record time and set a new benchmark for them!

In March  2024, you were struggling with your career, trying to look for MBA programs. You had just completed your law degree and were struggling to earn well, looking for good jobs.

You tried a different strategy and worked on data protection and privacy management, which was in high demand but there was a low supply of talent. Most people had no clue about this area.

There was nothing to lose anyway.

You started learning a few basic skills around reviewing privacy policies, cookie policies, etc. for websites, how to do privacy impact assessments and data transfers.

You created a profile on a couple of freelance platforms and also started approaching a few international and domestic tech startups, privacy consultants, and helped them with increasing their visibility through podcasts, social media, blogs and case studies of their customers.

You also  assisted a few domestic and international startups with reviewing their privacy policies, cookie policies, etc. and conducted privacy assessments.

You got some great testimonials from them, which soon translated into paid work and lots of referrals.

You got your first paid client before the end of your first month, who was very impressed with your work and gave you a few introductions as well to other clients.

Within 3 months, the volume of work grew exponentially. You started hitting USD 500-600 earnings per month.

You realised the potential in this area and jumped all in. You started preparing for the CIPP exam as well so that you could charge higher.

You were involved in more advanced projects now.

At this stage, you also started networking with partners of Big Four Firms in India, Dubai, US, Canada, etc. and started helping them with building their brand and writing articles.

Many of them were very impressed that you had already assisted real clients with privacy work.

By the end of the 5th month you started earning about USD 1000 per month and cleared your first CIPP Exam.

You had a part-time job from an international startup, and that was stabilising your earnings.

You doubled your charges at this point to USD 20/hr. This was a major turning point in your life.

You hired a junior from a Tier 2 city to deliver the work and take care of administrative issues and a couple of MBA students to assist you with pitching and improving your online presence.

You were now earning about USD 2000 per month.

You also cleared the exam for 3 other regions as well in the next few months.

You were being approached frequently by headhunters for open positions, but rejecting the offers because you were already growing much faster.

However, it was your dream to work in a Big Four firm’s foreign office.

You asked the Big Four partners whom you had assisted earlier for testimonials and recommendations to their offshore offices.

One day, after about 8 months into this journey, you were shortlisted for an interview by a Big Four firm for their Dubai/Singapore office.

They were impressed with your rich track record.

They also saw recommendations from the other Big Four partners. When they reached out to them to get feedback on your work, they got amazing reviews.

That was it! You got the job in Dubai in 9 months.

You shifted there and have since been enjoying the journey.

You are now thinking of the next big move in your life.

One option is to set up your own firm in India – you already have the clientele and a strong reputation.

Maybe you could set up a small consultancy firm in India that makes about USD 10,000 per month.

You may get opportunities to move to the UK, US or Canada as well in the next 2 years, if you want.

This will also enable you to earn about USD 150,000 – USD 200,000 per year.

These are both amazing options.

Sky is the limit for you now!

However, for now, you are enjoying your life in Dubai. The work-life balance is great. You are also able to take vacations and have prepared a bucket list for your travel.

You feel a great sense of achievement. Not everyone has so many amazing choices available to them.

What is next for you?

Will you migrate to Canada, the UK or some other country?

Will you expand your agency?

Doesn’t it feel exciting to just imagine this?

Do you want this kind of future for yourself?

If you desire this future, the next step is to get the plan, so that you can take actions to realise this.
