Can non-NLU grads get law firm jobs

There is a popular belief that good law firm jobs always go to people from a National Law University, and that NLU students are preferred for any law firm job.

This prevents even many practising lawyers who did not go to NLUs from aspiring to work at law firms.

Is it really true that you can’t become a corporate lawyer if you didn’t go to an NLU?

Well, NLU students and even many NLU grads would like you to believe this, but it is not true.

We have seen non-NLU students succeeding consistently.

Even at top law firms, the ratio of non-NLU grads at the fresher level is usually 40%-50%

Unbelievable, right?

Well, here’s some hiring data of top law firms here for the past few years:

  • AZB & Partners recruited 46 freshers recently for their Delhi and Mumbai office in 2021, 25 out of 46 recruited are from non-NLU (more than 50%)
  • Khaitan & Co. onboarded 49 freshers in October 2020, 10 were from non-NLUs (more than 20%)

2022 and 2023 were no different.

Very good, but this is at a fresher level.

What about partner level?

But do NLU grads have an advantage when it comes to becoming a partner

Here’s more hard data:

Out of 22 partner promotions done by CAM in 2022, 11 are from non-NLUs

Out of 15 partner promotions done by AZB in 2022, 6 are from non-NLUs (and we could verify this for only 11 people because 3 are not on LinkedIn and one person doesn’t mention his college)

Out of 6 equity partner promotions in 2022 in JSA, 3 are from non-NLUs (we could do this for 5 people because one person’s profile doesn’t mention his college)

Out of 6 partner promotions in 2022 in Trilegal, 4 are from non-NLU

Even at the equity partner level the situation is different. Out of 8 equity partner promotions in Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas at 2023, 5 are from non-NLU!

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether you are from an NLU or not, if you do the right things to succeed in your career.

Several of our students who are not from NLUs have secured jobs in good law firms.

Here is the proof from LawSikho students who were not from NLUs and who got jobs at law firms

Hundreds of non-NLU students have cracked opportunities with good firms through LawSikho.

Afif Khan, (LawSikho, March 2019) a 2022 graduate from Aligarh Muslim University,  secured a paid internship at  Indus Law and converted it to a job.

Muskan Khandelwal, a final year student from Pune, secured an internship at Lakshmikumaran and Sridharan and converted it to a job within 6 months.

Nritika Sangwan, LawSikho (March 2019), a law graduate from Army Law School, Mohali, secured a job offer from Bharucha & Partners and later moved to Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas after 7 months.

Varalika Mendiratta, a 2023 BA LLB (H) graduate of Aligarh Muslim University got a job in Trilegal when she was in 4th year of her college!

That’s faster than even NLU students!

In fact, you can also work for international law firms – and they really don’t care whether you are from an NLU or not!

Nidhi Majethia, a final year law student at a local college who lives near Lonavala, is currently working as a part-time legal assistant at Dick Bailey Service, Inc., based in New York and as a paralegal at MC Law Firm based in Washington earning over a lakh per month.

Arup Ratan Roy, a 2022 law grad from Assam University, based in Karimganj, Assam secured a remote job as a legal assistant at Krause and Kinsman Law Firm earning more than a lakh per month.

What is the secret? How did these people from very ordinary colleges do it?

How can you get the same or even better opportunities than any NLU student?

I will show you the roadmap step-by-step. If you follow this step-by-step for 2 years, you will achieve it.

Attend our free 3-day bootcamp this weekend, starting Friday evening from 7-10 pm.

Does this only work for law students? Is there something people who are already practising law can do?

If you have already graduated, even then you can achieve these results. The route will be different, and it will take 2 years (generally speaking, some people do it much faster too). We will tell you exactly how and what to do in the bootcamp.

Here is a former district court litigator who joined a law firm, and has now started his own boutique law firm!

Rajendra Shahasane, Mumbai-based trial litigator, joined Saikrishna & Associates, and then quit to start independent practice.

He is currently building his own law firm.

Hundreds of other trial court litigators have started working as corporate lawyers and increased their income.

Many of them continue their litigation practice as well.
