HR professional got 40% increment despite career break while learning labour laws

Sunetra Mukherjee was an HR professional who had nearly 13 years of experience in Indian companies.

She was primarily into recruitment.

She had to take a 4 year career break for personal reasons.

Most of her work experience was pertaining to the recruitment space.

She faced numerous challenges in getting back to work:

  1. Lack of confidence
  2. Not being sure whether she had the latest in-demand skills
  3. The pandemic had hit, and getting opportunities had become more difficult.

Instead of going back to doing more of recruitment, Sunetra started learning new and different skill sets, like labour & employment compliance, drafting, performance management so that she could be more valuable to an organisation.

All of these new skill sets required her to develop an understanding of labour and employment laws.

We helped her to improve her CV and start networking using social media platforms like LinkedIn.

She started regularly sharing insights around labour laws.

As she developed her skills, she continued to apply for jobs.

Within 1.5 months, she was able to secure a new job with a company at a 40% increment from my last earned salary.

In this role, in addition to recruitment she was doing labour and employment compliance and HR-related drafting work as well!

She even drafted several important company policies for foreign jurisdictions where her employer had a presence – US, Mexico and Bangladesh.

Guess what happened next?

Although she thought that she would not get an incentive as HR is a business support function, not a revenue generating one like the marketing or sales function, she was surprised when the promoters had paid her one of the biggest incentives in the organisation!
