Stuck in a mid-career crisis? Just change lanes!

  • Stagnation
  • Professional growth slowing down over the years
  • Competition from new entrants
  • Inability to prepare for newer and more promising opportunities
  • Inability to build a personal brand
  • Difficulty in finding new clients who are willing to pay well

How many of these boxes do you tick? One? Two? Three? All?

Slow career growth is a reality for a vast majority of corporate and other professionals in India, including senior lawyers, CA/CS and compliance professionals.

In fact, many senior professionals find that they are still doing all the work that needs to be done, despite their experience and expertise. And no matter how hard they work, their income does not seem to grow sufficiently.

This is also a common experience of those consulting independently as CA/CS, lawyers and management experts.

You might think that those who are working in big corporations or firms don’t have to deal with these challenges, but the reality is that most mid-career and senior professionals realise that their career has plateaued.

What are the major pain points?

  • When you were young, you grew very quickly, but that growth has now slowed down
  • Your income or status or position grows 10-20 percent per year, 100-200 percent jumps no longer seem feasible
  • You earn well and are comfortable, but are unable to jump to the next level – seemingly occupied by only a few top managers
  • For some of you, it has been a while since you have been in this phase. This is also known as the middle management trap, a concept used to describe the slow growth that affects almost 90 percent of mid-career professionals
  • You can sense the competition intensifying every day with younger, hungrier professionals coming up the ranks
  • You sometimes wonder what you will have to do in order to stay relevant, stay ahead of the curve
  • Staying stationary and comfortable starts to feel like a bad idea

Do you feel like this sometimes? Are you facing the middle management trap without even consciously realising it?

Even once they are past the middle level, many senior professionals are forced to keep working even after they ought to have rightfully retired.

Simply put, their financial situation does not allow them to retire. Age will not always be on your side, and opportunities shrink as you grow older.

Also, there is tremendous pressure to stay relevant in a fast evolving world. Technology is changing, there are new industries and new companies which are rising, and younger people are always doing something new and interesting.

If you don’t keep up with the times, you will not be able to contribute to the new global or even domestic economy.

What is your current strategy to deal with the challenges that an ever-changing professional landscape and relentless competition bring?

How can you escape the middle management trap?

How can you get to the next level quickly?

How can you build a legacy? How can you stand out from other generic professionals?

There are many ways of doing this, but the best is to build an alternative career. Which will give you not just better opportunities but also a high income, widespread respect in your chosen industry and among your peers, and a fantastic network of high-value clients and associates that will pave the way for rapid growth.

And this career can be yours as long as you have a certain amount of experience as a lawyer, CA, CS, or management professional. We’re not talking decades of experience here, just a few years.
