How to prepare yourself for a career in arbitration and what are the new job opportunities

Do you want to know how to obtain opportunities in the disputes team of a large global law firm?

Do you want to lead the global dispute resolution strategy as an in-house counsel of a large multinational company or a fast growing startup?

Do you fancy a career in litigation, but are concerned about not having enough finances? Do you want to explore how to stabilise your income?

Do you want to help international clients with contract enforcement work across the world and earn much more than your batchmates in an Indian law firm?

Learning about arbitration and mediation is the key to get there. Do you know why?

Indian parties have filed the largest number of international disputes at the Singapore International Arbitration Centre in 2019 (see here).

The number of disputes before the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris to which Indian entities were parties tripled in 2019, bringing India to the 2nd highest position, from the 15th position (see here).

In India as well, there is a huge wave building up.

We have more than 35 arbitration institutions in India. Online dispute resolution has been the new way to go, accelerated through the pandemic.

The Commercial Courts Act makes prior mediation mandatory for disputes exceeding INR 3 lakhs where no urgent interim relief is needed.

The 2019 amendment to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act contains very unique provisions under Part IA, which allow for the creation of an arbitral council and accreditation of arbitral institutions.

This provision is not yet notified, but arbitration work is going to increase manifold.

In fact, there aren’t enough skilled arbitration lawyers equipped to handle such disputes work.

What kinds of career opportunities are available for lawyers who want to work on domestic and international commercial disputes?
